Filox is a type of media used to remove iron and manganese problems from water supplies. Filox filters can be installed in front of existing softeners that are having problems removing iron or they can be used as stand alone units.
The filox will slowly dissolve away over time, so filox material must be added to the system every few years. Beyond that, there’s nothing else to do. No salt, no preventative maintenance, just periodic back flushing is needed. Back flushing is totally automatic, so there’s really nothing to do but let the birm clean the water. Filox cannot be used to remove “sulfur smell” from the water. In fact, it cannot be used when sulfur smell is present. KDF material, which is described below, must be used instead.
